MEF Food Project 2004 Update

What a great day we experienced on Dec. 11. The weather was the most enjoyable we have had since we started the Feed the Children Project in 2000.

We gave away 1,500 boxes of food and 260 boxes of toiletries. MEF sponsored Feed the Children trucks from the ministry in Oklahoma City, and purchased about $1,350 worth of meat items. Other food items were contributed by Colorado Springs’ Circle Drive Baptist Church.

While the food distribution was taking place outside, indoors children visited and posed for pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Hundreds of stuffed toys were given to the children while they and their parents enjoyed donuts, cookies and coffee. As the children waited in line, Ken Musselwhite entertained them with his puppet.

Each year, many people are involved in this ministry, and we are grateful to you for cheering us on. Your contributions and help encourage MEF to stand in the gap for others. The committee from Good Will Industries and the Department of Human Services does a wonderful job, and is always thankful we are there to support so many of their clients. Thank you to the following known contributors: Krispy Kreme, donuts; Denny’s, coffee; King Sooper Grocery, cups, napkins, creamer and sugar; YMCA, coat drive; Peyton Schools 5th grade class, clothes and toys; El Paso County DHS/Coalition, book drive; Pikes Peak United Way, dolls; Saunders Costumes, costumes for Santa/Elves; Loretta Jacobs, Karaoke; Ken Musselwhite, puppets; Circle Drive Baptist Church, food items; Sara Miller and Carol Ketchem, hats and gloves; MEF contributors, financial donations.

Volunteers were from MEF, Goodwill, DHS and Manitou Springs High School, headed by Mariah See.

We hope you will be involved in Christmas 2005.

Lasting Memories
Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus attend Feed the Children every year. They bring some of their elves to take and print pictures of the children and the families. One of the families attending the event this year had an elderly lady in a wheel chair with them. As they were standing in line, this spunky lady spotted a Denver Bronco stuffed toy on the counter and commented on how much she liked it. The elves gave her the doll. Her face lit up like a child on Christmas morning. She and her family made it up to Santa and everyone got to be in the picture. She was prominently placed in between Santa and Mrs. Claus with her daughter and grandchildren lined up behind.  Once the picture was taken, her daughter came back over to the elves to thank them. She was in tears as she explained to them her mother has lung cancer and kidney disease and this will be her last Christmas. She was full of gratitude thanking the elves for “making my mother’s Christmas.” A few weeks later, the family received an 8” x 10” print of the Santa picture so they could all remember how happy she was at that moment in time.
