Food Project 2005 update

December 22, 2005 The tenth chapter of Acts mentions a man named Cornelius who was God-fearing and gave generously to the poor. One day an angel came to him and said, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God”. On December 10th, your generous financial gifts helped Music Evangelism Foundation sponsor two semi truckloads of food and toiletry articles totaling 1,760 boxes-weighing 41,280 pounds with a value of $62,578.52.  Additional gifts included toys, non-perishable food items and articles of clothing.

We have enclosed a partial list of the known organizations and individuals who contributed to this worthy project.  As you see in the pictures, there were dozens of volunteers, most of whom wore festive hats, aprons with the logo of Feed the Children, and costumes depicting Santa and his entourage!  What fun.

Volunteers helped with set-up and organization of the event, unloading the trucks, carried boxes for the recipients, and of course helped with clean up.

For many, the day started about 6:00a.m. and ended around 3:00p.m.  Space does not allow telling the whole story of God’s blessing on that special Saturday. Even after the 1,300 invitations were handed in, many more were standing in line to receive.  We estimate about 200 additional people attended that day with hopes of receiving a little extra.  And that they did- no one was turned away.  (Loaves and fishes!!)

We estimate about 3,000 families in the area need help of this kind each Christmas.  Our goal is to help every one of them. As with Cornelius, your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.  He uses people to accomplish His work. Always has~always will.  He certainly used you and your generous spirit on December 10th.  Thank you.

The different departments of Goodwill Inc. of Colorado Springs and the El Paso County Department of Human Services accumulated the 28 donations listed above. As listed in the letter, Music Evangelism Foundation sponsored the Feed the Children trucks with financial contributions in excess of $4,000 collected to help defray this cost. Additional gifts donated: 100s of stuffed animals, articles of clothing and household goods, and many non- perishable food items. We saw many of our M.E.F. friends as they volunteered on that day.

International Bible Society allowed us to purchase 400 new testaments at their cost. All but a few were given out.  Local churches involved through M.E.F. were First Baptist Church of Black Forest, Circle Drive Baptist Church, both of Colorado Springs. Elmo Baptist Church of Roxie, MS also participated in a generous way. It has come to our hearts and minds that there was an apparent need for coats, gloves and hats, especially for children.  We have discussed this and wish to let it be known that next year we will focus on these items in addition to the Feed the Children food boxes.  Will you help by praying as to what can be done through your church or organization?

Thank you, and have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

About the MEF Food Project
MEF, in conjunction with Oklahoma City-based hunger relief organization Feed the Children, Goodwill Industries of Colorado Springs and El Paso County Department of Human Services, has for many years, distributed food, toys, and other gifts to needy families in Colorado Springs during the Holiday Season.

Each Christmas season MEF provides funding for food to help over 1,000 families and many toys to those who are finding it difficult to feed their families and have a joyous Christmas. The Christmas-time distribution includes 26-lb. boxes of non-perishable food, either turkeys or canned hams, paper products, toiletries, toys and other gifts such as clothing, gloves, coffee, soft drinks and hot chocolate. More than half (54 percent) of families with children seeking emergency food assistance are single-parent households. Thirty percent of all single mothers and their children are hungry or live on the edge of hunger.

We gather new unwrapped items such as:

  • Toys ~ small hand-held toys to give to those seeing SANTA (about 300)
  • Food items ~ canned meat & non-perishable foods
  • Winter hats, mittens or gloves ~ for adults and children
  • Monetary donations are welcome ~ to cover food cost
  • Special needs for the homeless ~ ready to eat foods and small gifts like socks, toiletries, small books, pens, paper and other small useable or enjoyable items
  • We encourage you, your church, Sunday School Class, Youth Group or Missions Committee to help us make a real difference in the lives of people in need. Call the MEF office at (719) 591-7481 or e-mail for more information on how to be involved in this Christmas project.
