A tie in the frying pan
We live in a time when many churches are not only being casual with their
music (choruses, contemporary songs, more choruses, etc.), but casual in
their dress as well. But, when we get to the point where we demand or put
pressure on our congregations to adhere to every idea the platform espouses,
then we are in for trouble, and a lot of it.
While in revival in Birmingham, Ala., with Ron Dunn a few years ago, many in
the congregation raised their hands when I sang and when Ron preached. I
told Ron it helped me sing the song when some raised their hands. Ron
responded, “It was great because not everyone did it.” The point is, when
everyone does the same thing in a church service, someone is wrong in doing
it.
One pastor in a West Texas church went to the pulpit, took off his tie,
placed it in a frying pan, poured lighter fluid on it, and set it on fire.
He then proclaimed, “There will be no more ties worn in this church.” He
thought no neck ties would make the services better and outsiders would rush
to join such a congregation.
The word stupid is not strong enough to characterize his decision. The
congregation was not stupid; he set fire to the tie and the church fired
him. If people want to dress up-let them. If people want to dress casual-let
them, as long as it isn't indecent attire, which I have seen many times in
church services. I've said it before: It is amazing that we would dress up
for a wedding or graduation exercise and dress down for the King of Kings.
